Kybella

Submental fullness, more commonly known as a “double chin,” is a common cosmetic concern. This pocket of fat is usually resistant to diet and exercise alone, but thankfully there is a new solution. Kybella is the only FDA-approved injectable procedure that can improve the appearance of your double chin. This minimally invasive treatment is an excellent alternative for those who are not ready to undergo neck lift surgery or liposuction techniques.
Am I a Good Candidate for Kybella?

If you suffer from submental fullness, or a double chin, and are unable to find a solution, Kybella may be right for you. Many individuals, both men and women, can develop submental fullness due to weight gain, aging, or genetics. Those who develop feelings of self-consciousness, unhappiness, and embarrassment of excess fat under their chin can benefit from treatment with Kybella. Individuals who are not ready to undergo a surgical procedure like a lift or liposuction can get effective results with no anesthesia, incisions, scarring, or downtime necessary.

Almost anyone 18 or older is a candidate for Kybella, but if you currently have an infection in the treatment area, you should not receive the injections as this could prolong or worsen the infection. A consultation at our Southfield, Michigan office is necessary to determine your candidacy.

What is the Kybella treatment?

Kybella is an injectable form of deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring substance in our body that breaks down and absorbs dietary fat. During treatment, Kybella is injected into the fat beneath your chin, destroying the fat cells. Once destroyed, the fat cells are unable to accumulate or store any fat, reducing the appearance of your double chin.

During treatment, a thin needle will be used to inject the Kybella formula under the chin. You might feel a pinching or burning sensation during the injection process, but ice can be applied to minimize discomfort. The number of injections you require in a session will depend on the amount of excess fat present and your desired outcome. The more injections you receive, the more defined your chin’s profile can be. Each treatment plan will vary from patient to patient, but generally, patients see results in 2 to 4 treatment sessions spaced about 6-8 weeks apart. However, up to 6 injection sessions may be necessary to achieve your desired results. Depending on your expected outcome, you and your doctor will determine a treatment plan tailored to your chin improvement.

What is recovery like from Kybella?

With this minimally invasive treatment, you can return to your regular activities right after your appointment. However, there are some common side effects associated with Kybella, including swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, and redness of the treatment area. These side effects generally subside on their own within a week.

Kybella treatments result in a reduction of your double chin appearance, practically eliminating any unwanted fat in the chin area. Results will gradually become noticeable over the course of several weeks as fat cells are destroyed and eliminated. This can improve your jawline and chin contour, as well as provide a slimmer appearance. Since the fat cells are destroyed, touch-up treatments of Kybella are not expected and results are long-lasting. It is recommended to continue a healthy diet and exercise to maintain these results.
